Connection - the key to happiness?

For those of you who read my blog, you'll know that my New Year's Resolutions are short this year. It's tied to three themes, I want to be STRONG, HEALTHY and KIND. I'm trying to focus on these concepts when I decide what to do - does it fit with what I'm trying to achieve this year?

I was inspired to write about the concept of "Connection" after talking to one of my clients. She told me her word for the year was Connection and it got me thinking, what does this mean?

Is it mind-body connection?

When it comes to Pilates, the mind-body connection is essential. I often cue clients to focus on their breath and let it help the movement. Your abdominals are engaged when you breath out so that exhalation can help provide stability with a difficult move (because your abs are working!). When you hold your breath, you often brace your muscles. So I want you to slow down, breath and think about what you are doing when you come to Pilates.

I have heard a client say "That's too hard! I don't come to Pilates to think!" Yes, I understand that. You want to slow the busy mind and just move your body. But if you take the time to think about the movement in your body, you might just get that bit more out of your session. Try it and see.

What about connection with family and friends?

How about the connection with your family and friends? Do you take the time to really listen to what they have to say? Do you check in on loved ones you haven't seen in awhile?

A Harvard Study on Adult Development found that connection is the key to happiness. “Personal connection creates mental and emotional stimulation, which are automatic mood boosters, while isolation is a mood buster”.

Connection with family and friends is a big part of who I am. I like to think this is one of my strengths, nurturing relationships with my loved ones.

How about the connection to your community?

Connection in your community can also help - when it comes to Pilates, you are all part of the Wellspring community! I see clients push each other to work harder, inspire one another and enjoy their weekly chats. I recently heard of some clients who went for coffee after class the other day and they didn't know each other before coming to Pilates. And I y watching the healthy competition between my Monday clients trying to outdo each with Pull-Ups on the Trapeze table (they are at 15, let's try to get to 20 Pull-ups by Easter!!)

I love what we have created at Wellspring Pilates and I want you to all feel valued and supported.

So have a think about CONNECTION and see if this is something you want to focus on as well.

Till next time Wellspringers,

Love Holly

xx
